The 2007 Lewis & Clark Cup was contested on Saturday, October 27th. Thirty-nine competitors
on 17 teams ran the 12-hour rogaine course. Eight adults and 30 juniors on 17 teams ran the 4-hour
rogaine course. Another 26 juniors competed on an Orange course to bring the total number of
runners to 103. Thanks to each of you for participating!! In a close race, eight teams scored from 218 to 253 points out of a possible 262. The 2007 Champions
are Rick Waldo (MI) and Nick Irish. They found all but one control. (Said control may have been moved
by a hunter; it couldn’t possibly have been the course setters’ fault. J ) High scorers for the 4-hour course are Shawn Smith and Mike Robinson (OLOU). The Junior 4-hour
winners are Kevin Hardesty and Chris O’Bryan from Owensboro, KY Apollo High School. Complete results for all classes in the rogaine are attached in a PDF file. Let me know if you have
trouble opening it. The Orange course results will be sent later. Many, many thanks go to the volunteers who helped make this event happen: Jim Carter and Rich
Mazzoli for initial course design, control setting and vetting, and keeping an eye on the east water stop;
Dan Mattingly for control setting and vetting, creating and printing the maps, and general all-round
support; John Distler for helping with registration and taking care of the north water stop; Arnie Franklin
for directing the parking and assisting on the Orange course; Louis Smith for getting the t-shirts and
directing the Orange course competition; Lloyd Vest for unloading the registration and hash house as
well as taking photos; Shawn Smith for stringing extension cords to the shelter and helping out at the
water stop, Mike Robinson, Jeff Hamilton and Mary Hamilton who pitched in during the day. The Finish
crew included Jim Carter, Louis Smith and Alison Ewart and, I think, we may have set a record for getting
the results done quickly. And each of these volunteers helped close up at the end of the day as well as
a multitude of other chores through the day. An extra special thank you goes to Alison Ewart for handling the paperwork for property permission
and insurance; obtaining the food for the hash house, cooking the chili and baking the bread. She also
kept the hash house going during the day and even provided relief at the water stops. Most importantly
she had to put up with me through all of this. Thanks to Deam Lake State Recreation Area and Clark State Forest officials for allowing all of us the
opportunity to explore this wonderful property!! Have fun and be careful, Paul Vice and Alison Ewart Lewis & Clark Meet Directors
