Night-O and Sprint Race
The Night-O at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park only attracted 18 competitors. Shawn Smith managed to run the course after having competed in an 8-hour adventure race in Brown County, IN earlier in the day. (His team finished 7th out of about 30 teams). John Thomas also competed in that adventure race. He helped out during the meet and stayed around to help pick up controls afterwards. Louis Smith and his granddaughter Brianna took first in the race, largly because they found the 75 point and the 70 point controls that had eluded most of the other competitors. They were 2 minutes late and were given a 10 point penalty. Dan Mattingly finished second with 413 points. Dan also finished 2nd in the Sprint. Jim Carter, the Meet Director, had earlier set out the course by himself but he was helped at the registration table by Paul Vice and Alison Ewart. Paul is on the injured list due to a bike wreck earlier in the month. ************************************************************************************************** Many thanks to Jim for directing this event. He did so at my urging, which is why I drug myself out onto the course after a long day. I'm sure I would have been exiled from the club if I had not shown up. -Shawn ************************************************************************************************** NIGHT-O NAME POINTS PENALTY Louis and Brianna Smith 525 2 minutes late Dan Mattingly 413 Chad Elder 393 Steve Socha 360 Shawn Smith 310 Mike Minium 268 Jim Farrell and Micah 243 Jacob Copler 190 Bill Edwards 178 1 minute late Jeff, Mary and Noah Hamilton 87 3 minutes late We only had 6 individuals compete in the Sprint. Mike Minium drove down from Cincinnati and turned in a very fast time on the 2.5km course. The 30 points that Mike took home from this event will move him to 28th in the national sprint rankings. Dan Mattingly was 2 minutes back, followed closely by Steve Socha. Dan will move to 67th on the national list while Steve moves to 119th. Mary Hamilton, Louisville's first female sprint competitor, finished 6th overall. She got 30 points for this race (as the first female) which will open her in the National Sprint rankings at 122nd on the Female list. Between the Sprint and the Night O, we held a very short club meeting. We discussed current mapping projects - Seneca Park and the possibility of mapping Lapping Park (Clarksville), George Rogers Clark Park (Louisville), and Mt. St. Francis (Floyds Knobs). We had a volunteer (Paul Vice) agree to direct a Sprint course at the Deam Lake Canoe-O on August 8th. Mike Moser is the director of the Canoe-O. This will be the last Sprint of the season in Louisville. We discussed having a Wednesday Sprint Series this fall. The Indiana club is also having a series of sprint races this summer. www.indyo.org SPRINT Course length - 2500m Controls - 15 NAME TIME Mike Minium 15:53 Dan Mattingly 17:55 Steve Socha 18:18 Louis Smith 19:55 Jim Farrell 23:35 Mary Hamilton 25:24 (1st Female) Jeff and Noah Hamilton 33:50
