Results, Waverly Park, 16 January 2010
This meet was originally scheduled for 9 January, but snow and very cold temperatures forced a delay. 16 January was a great day for Orienteering. Over thirty competitors faced atrocious trail conditions. Two inches of slick mud on top of frozen ground makes for tough running. The forest wasn't much better as thawed leaves/vegetation also slid easily on the frozen ground below. However, there were many smiling faces with many compliments for the map and courses. The week delay did hurt the turn-out but may have been a blessing. The trails were pretty torn up by days end. Hopefully, they will recover quickly--before the mountain bike community raises Cain. They have done an awesome job with improvements at the park.
Dan Mattingly set some real nice courses for our enjoyment. He utilized one butterfly control on the Green course, and two butterfly controls on the Red course. This allowed for some decent course lengths in the restricted area of Waverly Park.
Peter Edwards nosed out Will Edwards by one second to win the Open Yellow division in a time of 41:05. Diane McKim was the quickest female in 1:03:21.
In the Open Orange division, Carson Torpey was first across the finish line in a time of 2:05:53. Catherine Shelton led the ladies in a time of 2:25:50.
In the Open Green division, Jeff Hamilton, with a time of 1:21:42, squeaked past his daughter, Mary, who finished second overall, and 1st female to finish, in a time of 1:22:29.
We had 10 runners attempt a difficult Red course, given the condition of the woods. Koos Hagg led the pack with an excellent time of 1:11:27. Helen Hagg was the quickest female arounf the Red course in a time of 2:08:46.
We had one high school make the trip for the meet--Hopkins County Central High School. Tiffany Royal led the cadets around the Orange Course in a time of 2:30:21. Tommie Book was the fastest around the Green Course in a time of 1:42:46.
