Around 25 Orienteers
including several first timers were brave enough to try out two very unique maps
at our first training meet. The objective today was to teach the
participants certain, individual skills which could be added to their arsenal to
improve their Orienteering.
Two courses were offered on special maps. A line course on a window map was used to train participants to use compass bearings along with pace counting to calculate distance. A contour-only or "brown" map was used for the second course to force runners to look at a map in a way that they might not have in the past.
After an hour or so of individual instruction, the runners took off. I was pleasantly surprised that everyone, including the first-timers, finished their courses and with some very competitive times.
A big thanks to everyone for coming out. I think everyone had a good time and learned something new. We will definitely hold more of these type of meets.
