2007 OLOU Triple Sprint Event
On Saturday, March 24, OLOU held its first ever sprint only event with 3 sprint races at Horine
in the Jefferson Memorial Forest. There were several serious sprinters in attendance, including 2
ranked in the top ten nationally. Gabe Svobodny, from the Miami Valley Orienteering Club (MVOC)
is ranked 7th in the latest sprint rankings with 157 pints and Gerald Yip of the Cincinnati club
(OCIN) is 9th with 149 points. Gabe has one more race than Gerald. Gabe's dad, Tom, also tagged
along, Tom is ranked 12th with 135 pts.
Each of the 3 Louisville sprints had a different course designer and used a different section of the
property. Each of the races was worth 30 points to both the men's and woman's winners. Second
place is worth 29 points and on down to 30th place, worth 1 point.
The day was almost perfect for running, sunny, not too hot, with a little breeze.
The first race was a flat, fast course on the area near the manor hours. Mike Minium set the initial
standard with a time of 11:40. However, Gerald Yip was starting out as Mike finished and you could
tell that Mike's time wouldn't hold up for long. Gerald finished in a blazing 8:54. The Svobodny's
arrived after all the other competitors had finished sprint 1. Tom took the last starting slot with Gabe
2 minutes in front of him. Gabe finished in 11:20 for second place with Tom 5 seconds back in 3rd.
Dan Mattingly of Louisville, who had run earlier, had an identical time with Tom to give us a tie for
third. Mike Minium finished 5th. The first woman finisher was Maura Henkler of UofL, running in
her first sprint, with a time of 27:10.
The second race, also largely flat but with one 40 meter hill, use a ridge line running southwest from
the start. Gerald Yip had no problem with the hill nor any other section of the course running a 10:50
to take first. Gabe Svobodny took second in 12:41 with Mike Minium close behind in 13:15. Tom
Svobodny was 4th in 14:39. While Michael Snyder, of Owensboro Apollo was 5th only one second
back from Tom. Michael was the 2006 Kentuckiana High School Orienteering individual champion.
First place on the female side was Mary Hamilton, the course designer for sprint one. Her time was
19:01. Mary is ranked 56th nationally based on a nice showing in two Sprints at the Flying Pig 'A'
meet in Cincinnati on March 17th.
The third race was the shortest. It used a largely flat area extending south from the start. Gerald Yip
again showed his heels to the pack, finishing first with a snappy 7:50. This time the elder Svobodny,
Tom, took second place with a 9:34. Mike Minium squeezed into third with Gabe Svobodny in 4th.
Jeff Hamilton was 5th in 13:48. Mary Hamilton took another first on the female side in 16:34.

I want to thank my helpers in this event. Course designers Mary Hamilton and Dan Mattingly. Those
who helped me hang controls on Friday night and Saturday morning, Dan Mattingly: course 3, the
Hamilton family and friends: course 1. I hung course 2 by myself. Also thanks to Jim Carter and Sherry
for registration. Paul and Alison, Jeff and Eric Hallstrom for start and finish and results. Control pick
up was by Jim and Sherry, Jeff and Mary, Eric and, I believe, Ray Hart.
